Our Story
20 years ago, while on helm of his directorship in KTDA Authority, our director decided to teach his village mate how to plant tea seedlings perpendicular from the slope of Mount Kenya and he went on to establish a grower’s agency with his first and second born daughters Ms. Joyce Munene, Ms. Juliet Munene and the son Mr.Brian. This practice evolved into an annual tradition as year by year the farm grew from 1,000 bushels on a ¼ acre in 1985, to a 30-acre estate in 2022. The produce, together with tea leaves from neighboring tea gardens, was delivered to far off factories for processing in the traditional cut, tear and curl method, that is Munuga Tea Factory at a price of Ksh 50/kg. One decade later, our director and his extended family via visit to Gatanga factory in 2017, realized that customers could enjoy a superior taste and increased health benefits if the leaves were rolled instead of cut,tear curl(CTC) if more organic fertilizer was produced and applied, and if innovation in the tea production process was carefully managed from start to finish. In 2018 EGPL Ltd. was registered as a cottage tea factory processing 2,000 kilograms of fresh green leaf per day. The resultant product of specialty teas targets a discerning clientele demanding the highest quality teas.
